HIVA is currently implementing HIV/AIDS treatment care and support funded by Global Fund through Kenya Red Cross Society (2019-2021). HIVA is currently implementing Project Title: Expanding HIV prevention, care and treatment services to reach Universal Access (80% coverage) to reduce both incidences and the associated impact in Mandera County funded by Global Fund through Kenya Red Cross Society

HIVA is currently implementing project title: Improving livelihoods of Libehiya Ward through use of Renewable energy for enhanced water availability in Mandera County funded by Global Environmental Facility- UNDP (2020-2021)

HIVA has successfully implemented two projects in Mandera County funded by ACT through Embassy of Sweden and UkAid (DFID) in Kenya. First project title: Institutional Capacity strengthening for integration of gender into climate change in lafey constituency of Mandera County. We have conducted several training and capacity built communities about climate change. We have developed final county policy on “Integrated water resources and services management and development” for Mandera County.

Second Project: The overall objective of the proposed project is to enhance the resilience and the capacity of the local community to adapt to effects of climate change through improved livelihoods in Mandera County. We have conducted several training and capacity built communities about climate change.

HIVA successfully installed a solar panel pumping system for a borehole in Kamora liban of Lafey constituency in Mandera County. An existing borehole that utilizes diesel powered engine was installed with a hybrid system. This has greatly reduced the cost that the community incurred in purchase of diesel in order to access water and also reduced the greenhouse gases that are produced in the process of pumping the water. The use of solar power in pumping water has resulted in minimal use of diesel fuel. This is not only saving on cost of buying the fuel but also on environmental concerns associated with the use of fossil fuels. Minimizing use of fossil fuels and use of renewable energy is an important climate change mitigation measure.

Activity 1: Community and Public Participation on Proposed IWRM Policy Forum:
The first forum was held in January, 2016 and was attended by stakeholders representing County Government, NSAs, youth, religious leaders, women and elders. There were a number of outcomes from the meeting:
i. Let the Policy be shared with all stakeholders in the whole of Mandera County.
ii. Let relevant Ministry fund further public consultations and even peer review of the Policy
iii. Other stakeholders should support counties efforts to come up relevant policies e.g Climate Change and forests conservation policies
The second forum held in February elaborately discussed the policy and its contents. Representatives from selected government and civil society organizations gave final remarks. All acknowledged the great and courageous effort by HIVA and the County of Mandera. The inputs to the Policy were to be made and then the edited version shared with the Chief Officer of the Ministry of Water, Energy, Environment and Natural Resources; department of Water and Sanitation, County government of Mandera. The CEO HIVA, Amina Mohammed, gave final remarks and thanked all participants for coming for the consultations.
